Reaching Aizu Wakamatsu City by Public Transport

From Tokyo

  • Take the highway bus leaving from Shinjuku.
  • The bus takes around 5 hours and costs up to 4800 yen per way.

From Sendai Airport

  • Take the highway bus leaving from Bus Stop No. 1 outside Sendai Airport.
  • Costs approx 2900 yen and takes 3.5 hours per way.

From Fukushima City

  • Take the highway bus leaving from Bus Stop No. 9 outside the East Exit of Fukushima Station.
  • About 1700 yen per way. (Takes 1.5 hours)
  • You don’t need a reservation.

From Koriyama City

From Nihonmatsu City

  • Take the highway bus. Leaves from the bus stop outside the Nihonmatsu IC exit off the Tohoku Expressway. See here for the location of the bus stop to go to Aizu Wakamatsu.
  • Costs about 1300 yen per way (takes 1 hour)
  • You don’t need a reservation.

Getting Around Aizu-Wakamatsu City

There are 2 loop buses that circle Aizu-Wakamatsu City: the Haikara Loop Bus & Akabe Loop Bus. They look like old British buses.

They pass by all the main tourist destinations, including Tsuruga-jo Castle, Iimoriyama, Oyakuen, Bukeyashiki, as well as stopping at Aizuwakamatsu Station and Highashiyama Onsen.

1-Day Bus Pass

  • You can buy a 1 day bus pass for 500 yen.
  • You can’t buy this pass on the city buses.
  • But you can buy it at information booths at the following places: Aizu-Wakamatsu Station, Aizu Samurai Residences, Tsurugajo Kaikan, Higashiyama Onsen Tourism Association, Tsuruga-jo Tourist Information Center, Iimoriyama Tourist Information Desk, Oyakuen Garden, Aizuwakamatsu Tourism Bureau, & Nanokamachi Station Eki Café.

2-Day Aizu Gurutto Card

  • The card gives you unlimited 2-day access to the following transportation systems within the Aizu region: JR and Aizu Railway lines, Aizu Bus, Aizuwakamatsu City Classic Town Bus (Haikara-san and Akabe), and Bandai Toto Bus.
  • You can buy the card from: Aizuwakamatsu Station, View Plaza Aizuwakamatsu, Higashiyama Onsen Tourism Association and Nanokamachi Station Eki Café.
